Are you too out of the Box?

Are you too out of the Box?

“How much is too much?”  I get asked this question all of the time.  This is a particularly hard question to answer from a wedding etiquette standpoint BUT as a person who always thinks out the box, it’s relatively easy.  I always tell my brides the Dos and Dont’s of the wedding day, but I let them ultimately decide how they want to remember it.  I am all for incorporating your own style, but I believe the non-traditional formats are best kept for the wedding reception.

The wedding ceremony time is a sacred time, and the symbolism of it should be kept that way.  You don’t want to look back on your wedding ceremony, as if it were a big joke!

There are certain ceremony traditions I encourage, including the lighting of the unity candle or sand and holy communion, as these traditions symbolize the sanctity of joining two families together.

When it comes to the wedding reception, this is your time to think outside of the box.  The wedding reception should show off who you are as a couple.  If you’re fun and adventurous or elegant and classy, this should show in your wedding décor, entertainment, and program.

We’ve had bride’s incorporate human strolling stations, wedding magicians, comedians, Brazilian dancers and more.  I personally encourage it!  This is your first time hosting a party as a married couple. Throw a great party for your guests that they won’t forget.

Who should foot the Bill?

Who should foot the Bill?

Traditionally the wedding day has always been paid for by the Bride’s family, which has a long standing history as to why that was done, however there have been a lot of changes to this tradition in the last 10 years or so. You may be shocked to know that wedding couples are mainly paying for their own shindigs, and allowing family members to make financial contributions in various aspects i.e., paying for the wedding flowers or paying for the wedding cake or invitations.

As the professional working couple is more educated and marrying later in life, they are a bit more established, bringing more money to the table, paying for the wedding themselves.  But do keep in mind that just because you have your own money, it doesn’t mean that mom or dad doesn’t want to contribute- so don’t close that option out.

Parents, especially fathers, take pride in giving their daughters away, so don’t leave them out of the wedding finance planning meeting.  My suggestion is that at the beginning of the wedding planning process, sit down and discuss the wedding budget with both sides of the family, and ask them if they will be able to contribute and how much.  It’s always best going in that you are clear of how much money you have to work with.  Average wedding costs are $20,000 and up depending on how elaborate you want the day to be.  As a side note, if there is a side of the family not contributing to the wedding day, they shouldn’t be contributing to the wedding day list.  So the question is… Who should foot the Bill?  The answer, anyone inviting guests should.

To Registry or Not to Registry?

BridalRegistry

To Registry or Not to Registry?

Brides are still on the fence about Wedding Registries.  Should you do a traditional registry, ask for money, or register for a honeymoon gift? So many decisions!!!!  My advice is to do what works for you.  If you are shy about asking for monies for your guest….DON’T.  If you don’t have a problem with it, although it goes against every wedding etiquette guru, then go ahead.  The guests you are inviting know you and won’t be offended.  And in today’s economy, it’s not uncommon for a bride and groom to ask for money in lieu of gifts.  If you do decide- and I am not telling you if it’s right or wrong (my disclaimer), here are a list of poems I found on the web, that I provide to my clients.

If you decide to go with the traditional wedding registries there are some great stores that have the cutest thing you will need…ie Bloomingdales, Crate and Barrel, Target…just to name a few.

Wedding pressure….Keeping your Sanity.

Wedding pressure….Keeping your Sanity.

The biggest mistakes most brides make is involving too many people in the wedding decision process.  I mean who wouldn’t be ready to pull out their hair listening to the opinions of their mother, their mother-in-law, their maid of honor, their bridesmaids, their cousin (who didn’t make the wedding cut), their church buddies…and the list continues.  How can anyone be sane listening to so many different personalities???? I always tell my brides to narrow their entourage down to 2 people, especially when picking out their wedding dresses, their venue, and any other major wedding decision.  You can decide who those 2 people will be (hopefully 1 of the 2 will be the groom) that will go with you to the major appointments.  It’s hard to not become a BRIDEZILLA when you are influenced by the voices of so many people because eventually you will have a breaking point.   The wedding day is about you and your groom, and you have to do what makes you happy.  Of course you have to find the balance of this, as you don’t want to offend you or the groom’s family; but you’ll find your way.  We all did.
